NY Driver Violation Point System
The New York DMV tracks the points on your drivers license. If you receive 11 points in 18 months your New York Drivers License will be suspended.
NY DMV Points System
- Speeding - 3 points
- Speeding 1-10 MPH - 3 points
- Speeding 1-20 MPH - 4 points
- Speeding 21-30 MPH - 5 points
- Speeding 31-40 MPH - 8 points
- Speeding over 40 MPH - 11 points
How the NY DMV Calcuates Your Point Total
- You must be convicted of the traffic violation for the points to be added to your point total
- The points for violations that all occured within the last 18 months of one another are added together to calculate your points total
If your point total reaches 11 points or more the DMV notifies you and your New York Drivers License is suspended.
Drivers License Point Reduction (up to 4 points)
The NY DMV has approved the online defensive driving course for traffic ticket point reduction.
Up to 4 points can be reduced from a NY drivers license to help avoid license revocation or license suspension.
The NY Defensive Driving Course that we recommend electronically transmits your completion to the New York DMV so the points are automatically reduced by 4.
How Points are Reduced on Your NY Driving Record
To qualify you must have received the points within the last 18 months from the date you complete the course.
If traffic ticket points were received 18 months or later, then the course will not reduce those points.
Once the online course is completed, the NY DMV is notified and the points are automatically reduced.
To find out if your drivers license record has been updated, you can request a copy of your New York driving record online.
Removing Points Can Keep Your Insurance Costs Down
Removing points from your NY driving record has two benefits: You may avoid a drivers license suspension and you may avoid an increase in your car insurance bill.
